A nine-year-old boy is found murdered at the bottom of a well near a popular beach resort in southern Italy. In what looks like a hopeless case for Guido Guerrieri, a Senegalese peddler is accused of the crime. Faced with small-town racism, Guido attempts to exploit the esoteric workings of the Italian courts. The voice of Sean Barrett brings this gritty Italian detective series to life.

I love books about Italy by Italian writers and I have just discovered a new one - Gianrico Carofiglio. His writing is tight with the action moving quickly sweeping the reader along with it. This is the first in a series about an attorney in Bari, Italy, Guido Guerrieri. In this book, Guerrieri represents a man from Senegal who is accused of murdering a child. I won't spoil the story but the courtroom drama is high and we get a glimpse into the Italian legal system and its workings, both efficient and inefficient.

Guerrieri isn't just a courageous attorney who takes on difficult cases, though. He is a flawed man who is suffering in his soul when his wife leaves him. He is looking at his life; at the mistakes he has made and, at the end of the book, is a better person than he was at the beginning. A redemption story with the backdrop of Italy, criminals and the court system.

As soon as I finished Involuntary Witness, I immediately bought "A Walk in the Dark" by the same author for my Kindle. I am enjoying it as well and highly recommend this author and his work.

Involuntary Witness Guido Guerrieri Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Gianrico Carofiglio Sean Barrett Audible Studios Books Reviews

Excellent storyteller who can convey the frustrations of the Italian court system. He conveys emotion, both of the protagonist and his client, and sets the story in the city of Bari, giving the reader the experience of being in southeast Italy-the heat, the mistrial, the dark nights. A good read!
It was slow moving, hard to follow the entire plot. I did enjoy it but I don't know if I'd read him again
INVOLUNTARY WITNESS, Bitter Lemon Press, e-book by Gianrico Carofiglio, a former Prosecuting Attorney in Italy, that crosses the lines of several genre and has been translated from Italian by Patrick Creagh.
The story follows a portion of the life of Guido Guerrieri, a successful defense lawyer practicing in Bari, Italy. It proceeds from the point where his wife declares she wants a separation through several stages of his reactions until, and after, completion of the separation to a point where he `goes through the motions' of working until finally resolving his problems sufficiently to function more adequately. At this point he accepts defense of an intelligent African school teacher who has wrongly been accused of abducting and killing a young boy and a legal suspense story evolves.
The translation is particularly well done so as to present the author's multi-faceted story that sets forth 1) a totally viable and most interesting psychological study of a highly flawed character who subconsciously realizes that he does not exactly fit the Italian `macho' image, suffers from `free floating anxiety', suffers ambiguity about his ex-wife as well as his new acquaintance, and yet is highly effective in functioning in defense of his clients. 2) An expose of the highly flawed Italian Legal System. 3) A suspenseful courtroom drama.
The book is a little difficult to follow on a few occasions and may be a little heavy on court procedures for some readers but generally speaking is a most interesting read. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning fiction/non-fiction author.
Great, as always.
Great!
love reading Italian mysteries and this is good
This is an interestingly construed book which is really two stories running in tandem. The first is the story of a Senegalese peddler who is accused of killing a young boy. This is the mystery which drives the novel but it definitely not a "who dun it." Just over a third of the book concerns this facet of the book. It bears the mark of the author who was a judge in the Italian criminal justice system and the sections dealing with the investigation and particularly courtroom procedures rings true.In this sense it is a great "procedural" crime novel and if you are not a fan of courtroom drama, you will find it a bit tedious, but it is dramatic.

The second thrust of the book is an introduction into the character and the world of solicitor Guido Guerrieri. Midlife crisis par excellence , he has lost his interest in law, questions the path he has chosen, loses his wife who has more of an insight into his psyche than he does, develops panic attacks, meets what may become a new friend and more, explores the city he lives in, and begins to become a whole man again. The trigger to this is the defense of the peddler and his ability to refuse to compromise.

I shan't disclose more of the plot because it would spoil the stories for the reader. However if you give the book a chance, you will find that upon a second reading it intrigues you with what may develop in future novels. Guido , his wife Sara (who nails their problem when she says he has become a "mediocrity"), Alessandra Mantovani, delectable magistrate, Margherita a nubile neighbor, and a host of other characters which will appear in future novels, all intrigue.

If there is one fault in this novel or it might be a strength, is the lack of atmosphere, this is definitely not a novel in the "noir" tradition. Yet Carofiglio more than compensates for this with his introduction of timely details such as the music Guido listens to, appropriate literary allusions, and to anyone who has spent some time in Italy the stunning revelation that Sara and Guido actually like "American coffee" and the unique observation that what separates the Italian criminal system and the American system, is the Counter-Reformation (!). It is definitely worth reading several times and to those critics who attempt to read American sensibilities into this book, I say that they just don't get it.
